Plain Tea vs Flavored Tea: The Real Difference
The difference between a plain tea and a flavored tea is the addition of aromas and sometimes extra ingredients (peels, fruit, flowers) on an identical black tea base, not a change in the quality of the tea itself. The leaf stays the same; only the aromatic layer changes.
Plain Tea: The Leaf Alone
A plain tea, like our OP Craighead or our BOP Demodera, contains nothing but the tea leaf. The flavor comes solely from the grade, the garden and the harvest season. It's the most direct way to taste a terroir.
Flavored Tea: A Base, Aromas, Sometimes Inclusions
A flavored tea starts from exactly the same base: a specific black tea grade. Our Earl Grey starts from an OP, our Blue Mountain from an FBOP, our Lemon, Citrus and Red Berries recipes from a BOP. We then add a flavoring (bergamot, lemon, orange, to name only the natural aromas we use) and, depending on the recipe, real inclusions such as citrus peel, petals or dried fruit, which add both flavor and visual appeal to the bag.
Does Flavored Tea Contain Less Tea?
No. The black tea base is in the same proportion as a plain tea of the same grade.
The flavoring and inclusions are added to the leaf, they don't replace it. What changes is the profile in the cup, not the amount of tea.
Storage: Plain or Flavored, Same Rules
In both cases, keep your tea away from light, moisture and strong odors, in an airtight container. Natural aromas are volatile: a flavored tea loses a bit of its aromatic intensity over time, just as a plain tea loses freshness. Neither keeps worse than the other, it's simply one more reason not to leave an open bag sitting around too long.
How to Choose
A plain tea goes straight to the terroir: it's the choice if you want to compare gardens, grades and harvest seasons against each other. A flavored tea is a more immediate pleasure, designed for a specific moment (morning, summer, a craving for red berries). Neither is superior to the other, they are simply two different uses of the same quality base.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a tea flavored without artificial aromas?
By using natural aromas (like bergamot, lemon or orange in our recipes) combined, depending on the recipe, with real inclusions such as peels or petals, rather than a synthetic scent sprayed on the surface.
Does flavored tea contain less tea?
No, the black tea base is in the same proportion as a plain tea of the same grade. The flavoring is added, it doesn't dilute the leaf.
Is there a difference in storage between plain and flavored?
No different rule: airtight, away from light and moisture in both cases. Flavored tea simply loses its scent intensity a bit faster if left open too long.
